An Open Letter from Marcus Myers

I truly understand what it is like to be black in America. Also, I truly want the meaning of being black in America to change.

June 4. 2020

Dear Parents and Students,

It is with great sadness that I write to you. The past few days have been devastating to witness and feel. Our nation is under great turmoil, and the frustration of those upset by the injustices toward black and brown lives is at an all-time high. Unfortunately, among the peaceful protest happening all around the world, some are taking advantage of a noble call to action. Looting, violence, and chaos have never been the desired outcome.  Yet, we find ourselves in this very moment dealing with a broken infrastructure towards our black brothers and sisters, a broken city, and now more broken hearts.

As a black man who grew up in Philly, I feel every piece of emotion. To see another black life gone is, at times, too much to bear. I write to you from a place of empathy. Sharing the experiences of being racially profiled, judged, and treated unfairly because of my skin. Not by my personality, character, or achievements. I truly understand what it is like to be black in America. Also, I truly want the meaning of being black in America to change.

While we work toward that human right, you can expect us here at Musicopia to listen, understand, and act. While we may not be a civil rights organization, we are an organization that is, and always has been since our founding in 1974, defined in everything we do by a mission of equality for ALL children. To our students, we stand with you, and our hearts break with yours. We encourage each and every one of you to help change the narrative. I want to leave you with this, while the world seems to be in an uproar, do not let it steal your joy and dreams. Dare not to be defined by your skin, dare not to diminish your value, and dare not to live in fear. However, dare to be strong, resilient, and confident in the face of racism and injustice. This too shall pass.

Sincerely,

Marcus Myers
