String & Chamber Music Coaching

String & Chamber Music Coaching

Davis Barnett, violin/viola:  As a long-time youth orchestra conductor, Davis works with small string groups on basic technique as well as with larger string orchestras on repertoire.  In addition, he offers single workshops on the science of sound as understood through string instruments to non-instrumental students. Please visit his Catch the Vibrations residency description for more information.

John Blake, violin: John’s workshops focus on jazz history, improvisation, blues and other jazz styles.  Over the years, John has been developing solo violin works of standards and originals to feature the violin as a solo instrument within the jazz tradition.  John works with ensembles of all sizes and descriptions, including orchestras. Please visit our Jazz Workshops description for more information.

Gloria Galante, harp: Based on her long experience, Gloria’s workshops span the needs and abilities of students of all ages.  For younger students, she integrates school curriculum and music education, discipline, how to respond as an audience, and how to hold a steady beat.  For older, more advanced instrumental students, she focuses on improvisation and composition.  Gloria’s repertoire includes a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, classical, ethnic folk music and popular idioms.  Please visit our Jazz Workshops description for more information.

Orlando Haddad, guitar, Minas:  Orlando’s workshops focus on Brazilian music and culture as well as composition and songwriting.  Please visit our Jazz Workshops description or the Brazilian Adventure residency description for more information.

Chamber Music Coaching
Charlie Forbes, cello: Charlie provides workshops that focus primarily on classical music.  His greatest area of expertise lies in the realm of chamber music.  As an experienced teacher and coach, Charlie’s grasp of repertoire is vast and accommodates students at virtually all levels.  Each year, he provides chamber coaching to intermediate and advanced string students through Musicopia and a grant from the Amateur Chamber Music Players Foundation.   He is particularly enthusiastic about teaching students the quintessential chamber music skills, such as a flexible sense of rhythm, the ability to shape a piece without a conductor, and the ability to both lead and follow in an ensemble.

David Yang, viola and composer:  David provides chamber coaching to intermediate and advanced string students.  His energy and charisma make him a perennial favorite with students, who write each year to tell us how their understanding of music has been changed by their work with him.  David teaches his students to move beyond reading the notes on a page and discover the expressive and communicative possibilities of each work.
