Orlando Haddad and Patricia King of Minas will begin this workshop with a live performance of samba and bossa nova on guitar and vocals. After a brief description covering basic facts about Brazilian music and culture, the session is followed by a presentation of each percussion instrument used in samba music, emphasizing their specific rhythms and techniques. The next section includes a hands-on session in which teachers, led by Minas, will perform a Batucada, or samba percussion jam. If time allows, the session will end with a closing song in which educators may join singing a simple Portuguese-language chorus. Samba instruments are provided along with information about where these instruments are offered for purchase.
