Flamenco del Encuentro

This ensemble is dedicated to disseminating the tradition of flamenco music and dance. This group can expand to include singers, dancers and percussionists, offering assemblies that introduce students to both flamenco’s multi-cultural roots and its basic predetermined rhythmic patterns. The residencies lead students through an in-depth exploration of this highly structured form of communication between musicians and dancers. Flamenco’s oral tradition is based on defined patterns within a set rhythmic structure; the musicians follow the dancer’s cues with respect to speed, theme changes and dynamics. Since traditional flamenco music from the south of Spain owes a great part of its heritage to the music of Africa and the Middle East and especially the Eastern Mediterranean, students of many different descents find a sense of belonging and a common ground in flamenco.

This residency meets not only national standards in music, but in dance.  It can be tailored for all ages.

Flamenco del Encuentro has been on Musicopia’s roster since 2007 and includes Tito Rubio (guitar), Anna Rubio (dance), Antonia Cruz Arias (vocals), Joseph Tayoun (percussion), Monica Herrera (dance) and Cristian Puig (guitar).
