Residencies Overview
Musicopia’s residency programs provide a more in-depth experience of music and related arts. Participants can range from dedicated music students to those who have never even held an instrument. All residency programs can be custom-tailored to fit the needs of the teacher and workshop participants, including those with special needs. Our musicians are very flexible and welcome opportunities to collaborate.
Basic residency format:
- Upon request, residencies may begin with a planning session if teachers would like the musicians to tailor their content in any way. Musicians can also suggest activities for involving multiple classrooms. (For example, during our African Percussion and Dance residency, an art teacher can have non-workshop students create African masks to display at the final performance.) This also gives teachers the opportunity to explain their goals for students.
- Residencies usually start off with initial assemblies for the entire student body to introduce students to the ensemble and style of music being presented. This is a great way to include the entire student body in the residency experience.
- The residency continues with a series of four to twelve workshops with a core group of no more than 30 students. Ideally workshops will have 15-20 students or one classroom.
- The residency culminates in final assemblies where the student workshop participants perform alongside our professional musicians on stage for their peers and/or community.
- Some residencies also feature final festival performances with other schools or organizations, outside of school time.
Musicopia’s professional ensembles are receptive to your suggestions. Residencies include educational materials with optional and recommended research activities that address learning standards in areas as diverse as mathematics, science, language arts, fine arts and social studies.
