Strings 'Round the World
Barnett String Quartet
This inventive program offers a sampling of the unique and wonderful music from the many cultures that come together in the United States of America. Using a world map, children are guided on a trip around the musical world that is lively, interactive, and educational. They get a taste of Irish, Slavic, Native American, and Asian string music. And of course, the program introduces students to the great European tradition of classical chamber music. Students learn about some of the major classical composers, and its development into other musical forms, including fiddling. Children learn about how the instruments are made, how their unique sounds are produced, and how the music of Mozart and Beethoven relates to today’s culture.
This dynamic program encourages elementary and middle school children to participate and learn as they discover each new country, its place in history, its special characteristics, and the musical instruments used in its music. Students learn to identify the sounds and rhythms of each instrument singly as well as in a string quartet. The program is interactive and engaging, with students carrying out a wide range of tasks – such as identifying the instrument playing the melody, conducting the ensemble and even learning to draw the bow across the strings of a small violin.
Davis Barnett (viola) is joined by Diane Barnett (violin), Greg Tepperman (violin), and Gail Abbasi (cello), who is also one of Musicopia’s founders.
