Xiannian Xiao received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Shenyang Music Conservatory and served for eleven years with several orchestras in China before moving to the United States. In his native land, Mr. Xiao won numerous awards for overall musicianship and for Yangqin, including the “Excellent Work of the Year” (1990) conferred by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, and a First Prize in Performance for the composition “Yuge” (Song of the Fisherman) at the 1991 National Instrument competition held at Liaoning Province. In 1997, Xiao became principal percussion/dulcimer at the Liaoning Song and Dance Co. and in April, 2000, received official designation by the Chinese government as “First Class Performer.” After emigrating to the United States, Xiannian has continued his musical career as performer and Yangqin teacher. He is a member of the Cimbalom World Association. Xiannian brings a depth of feeling and brilliant technique to his playing of the Yangqin; his mastery of the idiom is truly remarkable. His style is marked by decisive precision and fluid spontaneity.

Xiannian Xiao has been on Musicopia’s roster since 2007, performing with the Peter Tang Chinese Ensemble, which conducts Musicopia’s Traditional Chinese Music and Instruments assembly program.
