Adib Rafela
Adib Samaan Rafela attended Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt from 1977-1980, where he studied with Oud masters: Farid el-Atrache, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Riad el-Sunbati, and Mohammed el-Qasabji. Born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1957, he began playing the oud when he was 12 years old. He is also classically trained on the violin and guitar.
Before coming to the United States, Adib performed throughout the Middle East and Europe with the Cairo Opera Orchestra from 1995 to 2003 under the direction of conductor Salim Sehab. Adib has served as a private instructor of the violin, oud and guitar since 1980 and performs with Animus, a contemporary Greek fusion ensemble.
Adib joined Musicopia’s roster of artists in 2003 when he began performing with the Spice Route Ensemble, which is comprised of musicians who are steeped in a wide range of traditions--Greek, Lebanese, Egyptian and Israeli. The Spice Route Ensemble conducts Musicopia’s Journey Into Middle Eastern Music assembly and residency programs for students of any age or ability.
