Did You Know?
  • Doc Gibbs was the Music Director on the Emeril Live Cooking Show.

The Doc Gibbs Ensemble has been on the Musicopia roster since 2000. For as long as Doc Gibbs has played the drum, he has taught the drum. Whether he took in students at his home or shared his knowledge and performances at his children's school events, Doc is dedicated to teaching the history and the rhythms of the drum.

The ensemble is comprised of drummers, percussionists and dancers trained in all styles of African rhythms and dance. Doc has included his mentor, Robert ‘Baba’ Crowder, one of the oldest and most respected African American hand drummers on the east coast, to his ensemble. Other ensemble members include Dorothy Gordon, Ron Howerton, Renee Harris and Joe Bryant.

The ensemble’s African Percussion and Dance residency, assembly and pre-school programs are educational, informative, and involve the students in an exciting journey of the drum using percussion instruments from Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean.
