  • The Peter Tang Ensemble presents a Chinese music program on WYBE Public Television.

Following and extensive music career throughout China, Peter Tang moved to Philadelphia in 2000. Within a year had created his Chinese music ensemble here. The group performs widely at community events and in local schools. Peter recently received a Pew Fellowship in Folk and Traditional Arts.

The members are Wu Peter Tang, Erhu (Chinese Violin); Juneling Huang, Guzheng (Chinese Zither); Xiannian Xiao, Yangqin (Chinese hammered Dulcimer); Sandra Guan, Percussionist and narrator. Each musician is highly trained on his or her unique Chinese instrument and feels compelled to share their music and cultural insight with local students through Musicopia’s Traditional Chinese Music and Instruments assembly programs.

In this assembly program, students are introduced to the various types of instrumentation explored in China. They learn the names of each instrument, what they sound like, how they work and why they are culturally important. The ensembles entire presentation is derived upon musical ideas of both past and present Chinese musical expression.

The ensemble has been on Musicopia’s roster since 2007.
